Un des cinq "chansonniers centraux" du répertoire de la chanson française de cour de la seconde moitié du XVe s., jadis qualifiés de "bourguignons" puis "du Val de Loire", désormais au nombre de six depuis l'apparition du chansonnier de Leuven en 2015.
Les premières lettres du texte des quatorze premières chansons du recueil forment l'acrostiche "A Estienne Petit", ce qui permet d'identifier un probable commanditaire. L'absence d'index et la disparition des premiers folios laisse supposer qu'une table aurait pu y présenter l'acrostiche de façon visuellement évidente, éventuellement accompagnée d'autres signes de propriété.
