Biography

Name given by seven ascriptions above chansons in the Chansonnier Nivelle de La Chaussée (Niv, c. 1465-1475), where four of them are grouped together (n° 24-27). Three of these songs are unique to Niv., the others appearing only in three of the five other so called Loire Valley Chansonniers (Cop, Dij, Lab2; not in Wolf and Leu — nor Lab1).
The musicological literature has identified this composer to two musicians bearing the same or similar last name : Jean de La Haye* and Philippon Des Hayes*. Leaving aside discussions about the possible provenance and date of Niv, the overall consistency of the designations De La Haye and Des Hayes in the contemporary documentation seems enough to cautiously favour Jean de La Haye*.
