Biography

The names "Elimot" and "Elimon" appear in two ascriptions of early 16th-c. manuscripts produced in a Northern Italian context. The Medici codex, which has been dated 1515-1518, ascribes the quite widely circulated motet Nuptiae factae sunt to "Elimot" (I-Fl MS Acquisti e doni 666, f. 72v), though two other sources ascribe it to Hotinet Barra*, and ten others transmit it anonymously. The manuscript I-Bc Q20, dated in the 1520s (or c. 1530), bears on each of its four booklets the name "Elimon" at the top of the first page of the motet Ascendens Christus in altum, unique to this manuscript (f. 11). It is reasonable to suppose that these two motets were composed by one and a same person.
Elimot and Elimon presumably refer to a French last name but they have not yet been documented as French proper nouns. In fact, none of them are even completely satisfactory French spellings. A place called Elimont is documented in Northern France which might offer a more plausible form of the name, though no individual named after it can be identified.
Finally, it can be noted that Elimont is an anagram of Molinet. Excluding for chonological reasons a reference to the famous earlier poet and composer died in 1507, the hypothesis that the two Elimon/t ascriptions might refer to a musician named Molinet might explain the complete lack of archival occurences of all forms of Elimon/t. A singer named Jean Molinet* was indeed employed by Charles V. He might be the composer of a five-voice cantus firmus Salve regina ascribed to "Johannes Molunet" in the Alamire manuscript D-Mbs Mus. MS34, f. 29v.
