Biography

Primarily known by attributions to his name of two French songs and religious pieces copied in three music manuscripts produced in the Veneto in the 1430s. One mention of a ‘Ser Giovanni Ragione, cantore’ at Siena Cathedral in April–May 1431 can convicingly be linked to him. The word "ragione" is the normal translation into Italian of the French word "raison", which in turn is an obvious alternative spelling of his last name to look for in archives. His rondeau Il est temps que je me retraye can be interpreted as an autobiographical evocation of his disappointing experience of courtly life, probably in Italy, which leads him to decide to travel back to his homeland, probably somewhere in France.
